a)In the State of California, individuals that perform handyman services cant charge more than $500 for labor and materials. b)This also means that you are not allowed to split up the project into smaller stages or parts to stay under the $500 limit. C)This law in some cases prohibits you from even being involved in a project where the cost of labor and materials exceeds $500.

If you hired unlicensed contractor, what happen:

**individuals who operating without a license in California is a misdemeanor that can result in jail terms of up to 6 months and fines that can run upwards of $15,000. The penalties are much stiffer for repeat offenders or those caught contracting illegally for work that stems from a federal or state disaster. Many unlicensed contractors are unaware this.

** CSLB may not be able to assist your complaint, a remedy in a complaint against an unlicensed contractor may only be available in civil court.
